LONDON (AP) – Britain’s Foreign Secretary says a judge will lead a formal inquiry into allegations that the U.K. was complicit in torture overseas.
William Hague says the country’s coalition government will hold the inquiry, though details were not included in a legislative program published Thursday.
At least 12 men are suing Britain, claiming the government was aware, or involved in, their torture overseas, including ex-Guantanamo Bay detainee Binyam Mohamed.
Two British intelligence officers are currently being investigated by police over allegations of complicity.
Britain’s previous government long denied it was complicit in any mistreatment.
