Beirut, (AFP) – A blast ripped through a Christian suburb of Beirut on Thursday, killing at least one person and critically wounding another, a police official told AFP.
“We can confirm at least one person has been killed in an explosion near the Saint Elias church in Antelias,” on the outskirts of Beirut, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
He said the person wounded was in critical condition.
A witness told AFP he saw rescuers carrying a man whose arm and leg had been torn off in the explosion.
The police official said a car belonging to Lebanese judge Albert Serhal was in the area when the blast went off but it was unclear whether he was targeted.
Army and police forces immediately rushed to the site along with the Red Cross.
